When Dr. Lawendy performs a professional dental cleaning on your pet, the process is very similar to what your dentist performs on your teeth. Patients are anesthetized before the procedure in order to ensure that they are comfortable and pain free, which allows him to do a more thorough cleaning. Each procedure includes removal of tarter and plaque buildup, polishing to make the teeth shiny and clean, and a fluoride treatment to keep teeth strong and free of bacteria. Occasionally dental x-rays may be recommended if we find something that needs to be examined more closely. If diseased teeth are found, extractions or endodontic treatments may be required.
Ongoing Dental Maintenance
Can you imagine going to the dentist once or twice a year but never brushing your teeth in between? The results would be horrifying! For this reason, we recommend ongoing oral maintenance for your pet, just like you would do for yourself. Brushing your pet’s teeth is the ideal option, but we understand that many pets do not take well to brushing. We can make a variety of other suggestions for those pets, including oral pet dental care products, chews, rinses, and more.
